PYRAMIDS
MEMPHIS
GIZA
The classic view of the three pyramids of Giza , with Cairo in the far distance. The largest pyramid is actually off to the left, but no picture can do justice to its size. Even after all the hype and expectation, it staggers your mind when you finally see it. |
Pyramids were built with raw blocks covered with casings of polished limestone, most of which has disappeared over the years. Note the casings at the top of this pyramid, the second largest at Giza (pyramid of Chephren). |
In the vault at the bottom of the smallest pyramid at Giza (Mycerinus). You wish you could sit there for hours to feel … something … but you can’t and you don’t. |
The climb down into the tombs within the pyramids.(Mycerinus). Pretty spooky, though well lit. |
View from Giza. Of all the sites in Egypt, the Sphinx was the easiest the most emotional, a place you wanted to spend hours just hanging around and looking. Relatively small compared to the pyramids, and damaged significantly in the face, it’s still the most compelling site in Egypt. |
Note the tail curving up from the back. |
The sphinx against a moody sky. Clouds on cue, gotta love it. |
