 Discussion:

VideoStudio’s AutoMovie Movie Wizard tool is wizard based and can produce two types of videos, slide shows based on still images, and traditional videos.

Operation is typical; you input your still images or video, choose a theme template, which includes effects and background audio, and make the usual decisions like whether to match duration to the background audio.

You can insert your own music, but each time you change templates, VS defaults back to the song included with the template, which makes it tough to experiment with different themes.

When working with digital pictures, you have your choice of eight themes, all very high quality. The new “Smart Pan & Zoom” feature did a great job mixing up the effects, and transitions and other effects were very entertaining.

When using Movie Wizard with videos, you have 13 themes to choose from, all very rich with overlays, frames and more content than most other alternatives. If you limit duration to the background music, VS scans the video file to identify which scenes to keep and discard, then matches the video to the music beat. It took five minutes to analyze an 18-minute movie; unfortunately, unlike programs like Muvee, VS has to re-analyze the file each time you load it into the program which gets cumbersome. After analyzing the video file, VS matches it to the beat of the music and lets you preview. From there, you can output a file, burn a disc or start editing the video in the complete VS program. Though the effects were nice, VS didn’t create enough cuts in the video for our liking. For example, using the MTV theme, VS cut one 45 second chunk from the 18 minute movie to – most other programs would choose
