Chapter Summary

An absolute must for MyDVD users. Where Sonic
has done a great job in software design, it has failed terribly in
documentation. Ozer has filled that gap with a book that takes you from A to Z
with easy flow and great use of screen captures. Highly recommended. It is the
documentation Sonic should have included with its product.

Simply stated,
because life is too short to spend it learning how to use a DVD authoring
program. MyDVD is a rarity - an easy to use program with great feature
depth. However, once you get beyond simple, one or two menu projects,
you're going to hit some walls that the Visual QuickStart for MyDVD can help
you avoid.
For example,
the book will help you:
- Fit
more video on your DVDs. With MyDVD, how you capture video, and how
you edit it later, impacts how many minutes of video you can fit on the
DVD. Unless you know the rules, you may be limited to as few as 60 minutes
on your DVD. The Visual Quick Start for MyDVD (VQS) details
how to plan for DVD capacity (page 60), includes a calculator to assist
your planning (page 65) and devotes an entire Appendix on how to produce
low bit rate files in other programs for import into MyDVD.
- Make
your DVDs easier to navigate and watch. MyDVD offers three
alternatives for creating multiple menu projects, each with different
navigational results. Use chapter points, for example, and your
viewers may have to blindly page through multiple menus to find your
content. Use submenus, and your viewers can quickly find the desired
videos or slide shows, but submenus have their own set of limitations.
Find out which method to use and when in Creating a Multi-Menu Project,
page 37.
- Make
your projects visually compelling. MyDVD uses templates to
simplify production, but if you use the default settings, all menus will
have the same image, audio or video background. Or, there's a technique
that lets you customize each menu, described in Customizing Single Menus,
page 184.
- Save
development time.
With most
authoring programs, you capture and edit your content, then build your
menus. With MyDVD, the optimal workflow is exactly the opposite; creating
your menus then capturing and editing your video. Understanding why
can save you hours of development time, as detailed on page 14, The MyDVD
Workflow.
The Visual Quick Start for MyDVD also has chapters dedicated to Cineplayer, Sonic's highly useable DVD
Player, and Sonic's DVD labeling software.
Let's face it.
While we love watching our home movies, no one wants to spend any more time
than necessary creating them. I'm confident that the MyDVD VQS can save you
significant time and help you get the most out of MyDVD.
